What Exactly Are Institutions Trading?
Ripple Prime’s new products are over-the-counter swaps between institutional clients and Ripple Prime. Their pricing references perpetual futures created by Trade.xyz and listed on Hyperliquid, rather than ownership of the underlying stock, ETF, commodity or currency. That means an institution can obtain continuous economic exposure to a traditional asset without waiting for the underlying exchange to open and without directly managing its own position on the decentralized venue.Ripple had already added Hyperliquid to Ripple Prime in February, allowing clients to access its derivatives liquidity while cross-margining those exposures against other positions. The RWA launch takes that model further by using onchain perpetual markets as references for a wider set of traditional-asset exposures.Virtu is among the institutions already trading the swaps. The market maker said cross-margining helps it expand across emerging liquidity pools as markets move toward round-the-clock access.

Why Does Cross-Margining Matter?
Ripple Prime is pitching capital efficiency as one of the main advantages. Clients can manage the RWA swaps alongside digital assets, FX, fixed income, derivatives and other supported exposures through a single counterparty relationship and consolidated margin framework. That matters because institutions trading across multiple venues normally have to allocate collateral separately to each platform. Capital posted against one exposure may remain trapped even if another position elsewhere reduces the overall portfolio risk.Cross-margining allows offsetting exposures to be considered together, potentially reducing the amount of collateral required. Ripple has been building that model since acquiring Hidden Road for $1.25 billion and turning the business into Ripple Prime. The platform has since expanded further into traditional markets. In August, Ripple Prime launched a Delta One business offering total return swaps tied to U.S. equities, indexes and digital assets. Earlier this month, Brevan Howard also selected Ripple Prime for multi-asset brokerage, clearing and financing.
What Role Does RLUSD Play?
Eligible clients can use RLUSD as collateral for the new swaps, although availability varies by jurisdiction. That gives Ripple another use case for its stablecoin beyond payments and standalone settlement. The strategy is increasingly visible across Ripple’s institutional relationships. Standard Chartered recently launched institutional custody for RLUSD while working on collateral integration with Ripple and LMAX Group. DriveWealth is separately integrating RLUSD into brokerage funding infrastructure. For Ripple, the value of RLUSD in this model depends less on retail stablecoin adoption than on whether institutions treat it as useful balance-sheet collateral. Embedding the stablecoin inside prime brokerage could generate recurring institutional demand tied directly to trading activity.

What Changes When Traditional Exposure Trades 24/7?
Continuous trading creates opportunities but also introduces a market-structure problem. A perpetual contract referencing a U.S. stock, ETF or commodity can keep trading during weekends or overnight periods when its underlying cash market is closed.During those periods, the perpetual market effectively becomes an independent venue for price discovery. Major news could move the contract before the underlying market reopens, creating temporary differences between the perpetual price and the next available cash-market price.Liquidity and hedging therefore become particularly important outside traditional hours. Institutions may gain the ability to react immediately to geopolitical, economic or company-specific events, but market makers have fewer conventional instruments available to hedge some exposures while underlying exchanges are shut. The swaps are currently offered through Ripple Prime’s CIV BVI licence. Ripple plans to extend availability to additional regions but has not identified the next jurisdictions or provided a timetable. That makes regulatory reach, alongside liquidity outside conventional market hours, the next constraint on how quickly the product can scale.
