Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP meme coin has fallen more than 99% from its all-time high just hours after launching on Base, illustrating the extreme price distortions possible when a new token begins trading with limited liquidity. LAPTOP launched shortly after 8 a.m. ET on September 9 and immediately experienced extraordinary volatility.CoinGecko recorded an all-time high of $199.51 before the token plunged below $2 later in the session. At the latest reading, it was approximately 99.3% below that peak. Other decentralized-exchange datasets recorded even higher momentary prices. DexScreener data cited by The Block showed LAPTOP briefly exceeding $300 before collapsing. The discrepancy reflects different trading venues, liquidity pools and methodologies during an unusually chaotic opening period.
Thin Liquidity Produced Extraordinary Valuations
The headline valuations generated during LAPTOP’s first minutes require substantial qualification. Arkham data cited by Decrypt showed the token reaching approximately $190.81 only two minutes after launch, implying a fully diluted valuation above $144 billion. At that moment, however, the relevant liquidity pool contained only about $48,000. The Block separately reported a brief market capitalization around $110 billion based on DexScreener data. Neither figure means investors actually placed $100 billion into LAPTOP.Market capitalization simply multiplies the latest token price by the applicable supply. When liquidity is extremely thin, a small number of purchases can push the marginal price dramatically higher and consequently produce enormous theoretical valuations. CoinGecko currently estimates 350 million LAPTOP tokens are circulating from a one-billion-token total supply. At roughly $1.37 per token, that implies a circulating capitalization near $480 million and fully diluted valuation around $1.37 billion. Those figures continue to fluctuate rapidly.
Tokenomics Put 30% With Founders
LAPTOP takes its name from the computer Hunter Biden left at a Delaware repair shop that became a major political controversy during the 2020 presidential election. Biden described the token as an attempt to transform that episode into a symbol of “resilience, redemption, and recovery.” The project created one billion tokens. Founders, including Biden, were allocated 30% of supply, with those tokens locked for six months and scheduled to vest fully over two years. Another portion was allocated to airdrops, including distributions to some holders who lost money trading President Donald Trump’s TRUMP meme coin and subscribers to Biden’s Substack. The project also linked up to 30% of supply to a series of real-world outcomes. Tokens associated with successful predictions can be burned, while allocations tied to unsuccessful outcomes are intended for charity.Biden explicitly warned buyers against assuming he or anyone else would make LAPTOP more valuable. That warning proved relevant almost immediately. The Financial Times reported that the token lost approximately 98% within minutes of launching, while CoinGecko’s later data showed a decline exceeding 99%. The episode resembles previous political and celebrity meme-coin launches where initial scarcity, automated trading and speculation created enormous valuations before liquidity normalized. It also demonstrates why LAPTOP’s circulating market capitalization should not be confused with money invested in the project. Even after its collapse, a $480 million circulating valuation does not mean $480 million of capital could be withdrawn at current prices. Actual liquidity is substantially smaller. For LAPTOP, the most striking number is therefore not its theoretical peak valuation. It is the speed with which thin early trading pushed the token toward extraordinary prices—and how quickly those prices disappeared once the market began finding a more sustainable level.
