Xiaomi share price has remained under pressure this year as it has confronted several major challenges, including the soaring cost of doing business and the electric vehicle woes. It was trading at $25.60 in Hong Kong, down by 58% from its all-time high. In contrast, Apple, has jumped to a record high, with its market capitalization rising to $5 trillion.
Xiaomi stock is falling as China EV woes continue
One reason behind the ongoing Xiaomi stock retreat is that Chinese EV companies are facing major headwinds, which explains why most of their stocks have tumbled. For example, Nio stock has plummeted by over 50% from its highest levels in April.
Li Auto, XPeng, BYD, and Polestar shares have also been in a strong downward trend, erasing billions of dollars in value. These companies are contending with the rising cost of doing business and softer domestic demand after the government ended some of its stimulus. China has also removed the EV sector from its list of priority sectors.
Xiaomi’s EV unit is also contending with the higher cost of doing business, which has continued in the country. All these have affected its growth trajectory, with its monthly delivery figures falling for two consecutive months. It delivered 40,015 vehicles in September, its highest figure on record. This figure was, nonetheless, down by 4.6% from a year earlier and was the second consecutive decline.
Rising memory costs affecting profits
At the same time, Xiaomi is facing challenges in its smartphone business as the cost of doing business surge. The company is now under pressure as memory prices surge, with its biggest suppliers focusing on the fast-growing data center segment. Some memory items have seen their prices more than double from the same period last year.
As a result, Xiaomi’s business has continued to remain under pressure in this period. For example, its smartphone shipments in the second quarter stood at 31.2 million, making it the third-biggest vendor after Samsung and Apple. Its deliveries were 26% lower than in the same period last year. Its annual decline was the worst among all brands. Samsung’s unit sales rose by 5.3%, while Apple’s rose by 23.1%.
Xiaomi’s tablet business also continued to deteriorate, with its units shipped falling by 6.8% YoY to 2.8 million. This business will likely remain under pressure for a while as the sector continues slowing down. All these factors led to a deterioration in its revenue, which stood at over 108 billion yuan, down from 116 billion yuan a year earlier.

The weekly chart shows that the Xiaomi stock has been in a strong sell-off since last year, making it one of the worst performers in the Hang Seng Index. It has fallen below the 61.8% Fibonacci Retracement level.
The stock also formed a death cross pattern, which happens when the 50-week moving average drops below the 200-week one. Therefore, there are signs that bears remain in control for now, which may lead to more downside. If this happens, the next key target to watch will be the 78.6% retracement at $19.65.
