Maura Healey, Democrat Governor of the Sanctuary State of Massachusetts, has had a sudden change of tune regarding how to handle the state’s migrant crisis in the days before President Donald Trump returns to the White House.
Just days after Trump’s victory, Healey blustered her way through an interview with Lawrence O’Donnell making clear she intended to use every tool in her arsenal to block mass deportation plans under the new Trump administration.
This included leveraging executive powers and state legislation to shield illegal immigrants within Massachusetts, despite federal laws.
In May 2024, Healy approved hundreds of millions in new spending for illegal immigrants, placing the needs of illegals ahead of citizens.
Healy’s administration also allegedly placed migrant children and their families in hotels with registered pedophiles and other types of sex offenders.
According to a report from The Boston Globe, hundreds of children were placed in hotels or facilities that housed or were staffed by convicted sex offenders.
In a shift from her prior bluster, Healey is now proposing significant changes requiring families staying in emergency shelters must be in the country legally, except for a handful of rare exceptions, effectively preventing new illegals from being housed in state shelters.
The change, which comes after a review of the state’s right-to-shelter law, would see all shelter applicants be required to show that they are either a U.S. citizen, a lawful permanent resident or are here “under the color of law.” Exceptions are made for households that include children who are U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents.
The governor is also looking to strengthen background checks for anyone staying at a shelter by requiring them to disclose criminal convictions in the state and elsewhere.
Her proposal would require applicants to verify their identity, residency and immigration status before being housed. Currently, shelter applicants are allowed to be housed before providing any documentation.
It would also limit those qualifying due to evictions to the state, not anywhere in the country. For instance, this would eliminate a scenario where a migrant is evicted in another state and then comes to Massachusetts and gets shelter benefits.
