Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Thursday that he was picking Ashley Moody, the Florida Attorney General, to replace Marco Rubio in the US Senate.
Senator Rubio was chosen by President Donald Trump to lead the State Department during his second term in office.

“Today I am proud to announce that I am selecting our attorney general, Ashley Moody, to serve as our next U.S. senator,” DeSantis said at a news conference in Orlando.
“These are always significant appointments, but I think right now appointments like these are more significant than ever,” he continued.
“This is a time for action and a time for Washington, D.C., to deliver results for the American people.”

Moody, 49, has served as Florida’s attorney general since 2019 and will likely be a trusted conservative in the Senate.
According to Florida law, vacant Senate seats are filled by the governor, who appoints a replacement to serve until the next statewide election.
With DeSantis’ appointment, Moody is expected to occupy the seat until a special election takes place in 2026.
The winner of that election will serve the remainder of Rubio’s term, requiring them to run for reelection again in 2028.
The announcement ends months of speculation over who DeSantis might choose to fill the seat.
One of the names suggested was Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law, who most recently served as the co-chair of the Republican National Committee.
However, she announced last month that she was no longer in the running.
Other candidates who were considered by DeSantis included his chief of staff, James Uthmeier; Florida Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nunez; and former Florida House Speaker Jose Olivia.
