Michelle Obama, Who Was Supposed to Sit Next to President Trump at the Carter Funeral, Misses the Event

Astute readers may have noticed a particularly glaring absence at former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral, and the supposed reason for her absence will raise a few eyebrows.

As TGP readers reported, a national funeral service is currently being held for Carter, who passed away at the age of 100 last week, at Washington National Cathedral this morning. This marks the conclusion of his state funeral, as NBC News notes.

Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Kamala Harris, and President-elect Donald Trump are all in attendance. Joe Biden, who declared a National Day of Mourning and closed the federal offices today, will deliver the eulogy.

But Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle, never bothered to show up to pay her respects to the 39th President. Politico notes that Michelle would have had to sit next to Trump had she attended the proceeding.

Because of his wife’s absence, Barack Obama ended up taking her place next to Trump. As one will see, he and Trump appeared to be having a good time:

But a person “familiar” with Michelle’s schedule ‘assured‘ Politico that she was not trying to snub the 45th and soon-to-be-47th president. Instead, the unnamed Obama source claimed Barack’s wife had a “scheduling conflict” and was forced to stay in Hawaii.

This individual refused to specify precisely what conflict was so severe that Michelle had to miss the funeral. But the fact that she was supposed to sit next to the person she loathes perhaps more than anyone in the world should not be ignored.

However, Michelle did have an aide pass along her condolences to the Carter family instead of an appearance.

“Mrs. Obama sends her thoughts and prayers to the Carter family, and everyone who loved and learned from the remarkable former President,” said Crystal Carson, a spokesperson for Michelle Obama.

Last year, Michelle Obama shared her disdain and fear of Trump regarding what was then a hypothetical return to the White House. This news came as speculation emerged that she was planning on seeking the presidency herself.

Here is what she said to Jay Shetty on his podcast “On Purpose” back in January 2024:

Things that keep me up because you, you don’t have control over them. And you wonder, where are people that, where are we in this? You know, where are our hearts? What’s gonna happen in this next election?

I am terrified about what could possibly happen. Because our leaders matter. Who we select. Who speaks for us. Who holds that bully pulpit. It affects us in ways that I sometimes think people take for granted
