Greenland’s Prime Minister Pushes Back on Trump’s Purchase Proposal – Insists The Island ‘Will Never Be For Sale’

The Prime Minister of Greenland has pushed back on Donald Trump’s proposal to buy the country and make it part of the United States.

Announcing his decision to appoint Ken Howery as his U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, Trump said that purchasing Greenland was an “absolute necessity” for national security and global freedom.

“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” he wrote in a post on Truth Social.

“Ken will do a wonderful job in representing the interests of the United States.”

However, Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede is insisting the country is not for sale.

“Greenland is ours,” Egede said in a statement on Monday. “We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom.”

Greenland is the world’s largest island and is rich in natural resources such as rare earth minerals, oil, and gas.

Its strategic location in the Arctic makes it important for global shipping routes, military presence, and scientific research.

Back in 1946, the U.S. offered to pay Denmark $100 million to purchase Greenland, although the deal ended up faling through.

Nevertheless, Denmark allowed the Washington to build military bases and radar stations on the island, as well as the set up a U.S. Air Force base.

Trump first floated the idea of purchasing Greenland, which is officially an autonomous territory of Denmark, back in 2019.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen dismissed the idea as “absurd”, leading Trump to describe her as “nasty” and to cancel a visit to the Danish capital of Copenhagen.

“It’s an absurd discussion, and [Greenland Premier] Kim Kielsen has of course made it clear that Greenland is not for sale,” she said at the time. “That’s where the conversation ends.”

“Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland. I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously.”
